Analysis

It's been said that money can't buy you happiness but is this true for all? Money is there to buy you things to make you feel happy but it doesn't get rid of all of the emotions you have then while you're buying it. The thought of getting something new is special when you first buy it but that feeling goes away after a while because it becomes something that you aren't as interested in as when you first got it. Is it wrong to buy things to make you happy in the time being? Not necessarily, but that's how people become broke by spending all of their money on things they don't need. You just have to be smart about it. In the movie The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby grows up to be a rich man and falls in love with a woman named Daisy Buchanan. He was willing to do anything and everything for her because he was madly in love with her and he thought that she was madly in love with him as well. Later to find out that she only loved his money. Jay ended up becoming a poor man for a while and in that time Daisy had left him because he wasn't filling her needs anymore with getting everything she wanted; getting showered in expensive things all the time. So, she moved on to find another man who was rich named Tom Buchanan. He had it all and she knew that she wanted to be spoiled basically so she married him and let him. Soon to realize that Jay had become rich once again Daisy told Nick Carraway, her cousin, that she still loved Jay Gatsby and wanted to be with him. Jay soon figured out that Daisy only loved his money and not him and she ended up back with Tom in the end. So what does this mean?“I hope she'll be a fool -- that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.” (F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby) In this quote is referencing to Daisy and it's saying that she will only be a fool for thinking that a man that rich could love someone more then their money. Back in the days there were men who only married woman just so they had someone there and they could show off all of their money to and have the spouse be amazed by how incredibly rich they are. How is that really a relationship though? If one is always spending money on the other to get their love or just so that their popularity goes up? Buying someone something to make them happy is one thing, but not to basically buy their love. If you really love someone then you don't have to buy them things, you just show them how important they mean to you. The problem isn't as big now as it used to be back in the 20s about money and marrying into a rich family but if you think about it the people who are wealthier do spend their money on things that they are just basically spending money to spend it. Some people do though put the money towards good use such as children's hospitals or programs that help treat children with diseases and can't afford to pay the money for the medicine. Or they put money into a foundation to make it better then what it was. Such as sporting arenas or things in that category. There are more things in life then people realize to spend your money on, it all just depends whether you want to spend it towards someone else or you'd rather be selfish and spend the money towards yourself and buy things that you necessarily don't need. In both the book and the movie, The Great Gatsby, the message that F. Scott Fitzgerald is trying to persuade is that nothing in this world can beat loving someone with all of your heart. There are things in life that are and could make you love someone or something but when you truly love someone you would do anything and everything for them. Just how Jay Gatsby wanted to buy Daisy back and did everything for her because he never stopped loving her from the time he was rich to poor to rich again. He threw those parties in spite of her so she would notice him again. In hopes that maybe she would eventually come back to him because he thought she loved him still but in reality she just loved his money. If you could choose between two things in life what would it be? To love someone unconditionally or to let someone buy your happiness? Is there really a difference or not? Letting someone love you with all of their heart and they would do anything for you is what you would probably want because what if the person who bought you everything you ever wanted but treated you like you didn't mean anything to them? They just wanted to show off their money like i've been saying since the beginning. You have to think about what do you want more, love or money? Kind of like would you rather have someone there for you or be alone. Because as I see it, loving money is nice and all but you don't have that person to be there for you and it can get lonely after a while. Works Cited: Fitzgerald, F. Scott. The Great Gatsby.
