Argument Essay
Everyday someone looks at themselves in the mirror and doesn't see what they want to see. Having that perfect hour glass shape of a body or so called a great figure. A kind of body that you want someone to look at and be like "wow she/he looks great, I wish my body looked that way." Anything to get that attention for someone, anyone would want. So they tend to want to do things to make themselves look like the models they see in the magazines such as anorexia or bulimia. But most of the time men or women choose something called dieting. Yes there can be good effects with dieting and eating healthy and exercising more but more outcomes then normal are negative.
"Eighty percent of U.S. women are dissatisfied with their appearance and 89 percent want to lose weight. As a nation, we spend more than $50 billion on diet products each year." (Medical News Today) Out of the 80 percent of women who are dissatisfied with their bodies, about 50 percent of them are on diets and 10 percent of the women on diets have an eating disorder. "Apporximately 1% of teenage girls have anorexia nervosa, 2% to 3% of young women have bulimia, and 3% to 5% more have variants of disordered eating." (Medscape) This shows you that not only do people dislike their bodies but after time if they like the feeling of not eating they can develop a serious eating disorder. Not only is not eating bad and effects the body tremendously, there are other ways to tell if someone has an eating disorder. If their body reaches below 85 percent of what if normal for ones body and miss 3 or more menstrual cycles in a row, that is another sign that an eating disorder is present in the body.
In recent studies, scientists split rats into two different groups. One a low-fat group and the other a high-fat group. After a few weeks they had noticed that the rats in the high-fat group had gained anxiety in their reactions and stayed away from places that were open as if something might happen there to them. Studies had shown that their development of dopamine wasn't the same, or normal, as it used to be. "Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that helps control the brain's reward and pleasure centers." (Psychology Today) Without the development of dopamine in the brain you can lack certain things such as the simplest emotional reactions and sex drive. A human body needs certain things such as carbohydrates in it because without certain proteins or nutrients, dopamine can't be formed and then the body will start lacking some of the most important things.
Most women tend to choose something called a fad diet. Seeing it advertised all over magazines and on television saying, "Choose this diet and you'll be guaranteed to lose 25 pounds in only three weeks!" There are four reason why one shouldn't choose a fad diet to go on; weight gain, altered metabolism, nutritional deficiencies and hair and muscle loss. Most women don't realize this but most of the weight you lose is just water weight. Once that person stops the diet they will resume back to their normal lifestyle and most likely gain the weight back and gain a few additional pounds on top of it. Also, if you go against your natural metabolism, it can negatively impact it and it can effect after the diet of the body when it's full and when it's hungry. Thirdly, nutritional deficiencies is another topic that women don't really pay much attention to like the rest. Without the carbohydrates in your diet or certain nutrients it can cause fatigue or the ability to not be able to function normally; not having enough energy. Omega-3fatty acids are a good part of ones diet. Lastly, one of the biggest things with participating in a fad diet is muscle and hair loss. "Since your diet is very low in calories, your body will look for other ways to get energy. One of these ways is by digesting your muscles. This is actually detrimental to weight less because muscles help you burn more calories eve when you are at rest." (Fitday)
Not only can one effect themselves with dieting but they can also effect their babies when they are pregnant. "approximately 7% of the subjects fit in a pattern of growth-failure due to malnutrition resulting from self-imposed calorie restriction, arising from a fear of obesity. Normal weight gain decreased in the adolescents at 12 years of age, followed by a decline in linear growth velocity. Puberty was also delayed in half of the subjects, and bone age was delayed 0.5 to 5.5 years." (Medscape) Why would you want to hurt your own body let alone the child that they are carrying. Knowing that when they are growing up that they are most likely going to have side effects from the dieting that the mother did while housing her child for 9 consecutive months.
Finally, another big thing that people do to lose weight is take dieting pills. People take both the over-the-counter drugs and prescription drugs. "Several potential etiologies exist for such problems, including arrhythmias or hypertension from stimulant medications (diet pills), acute electrolyte disturbances, or primary effects of the diet on myocardial contractility." (Medscape) It says that any or all of those problems can result in something called the long QT syndrome. So ask yourself, why would you take dieting pills if something that is undiagnosed is an effect from them? Researchers and doctors have yet to find cures for this syndrome.
People don't understand the long-term effects that dieting has on their bodies. They think it's a great idea at first and then sometimes they develop something serious that could be or is life threatening. Dieting is wrong and people should be happy with the way that their bodies are, not try to be someone else. There isn't a reason that someone should tell you that your body isn't great, because no matter what it is and then only person that one really needs to impress is themselves. Be happy with you and yourself. Your body.
